The LSU Women’s Basketball team has been nominated for the Best Team award and Angel Reese has been nominated for the Best Breakthrough Athlete award at this year’s ESPY Awards. The ESPY Awards will be broadcasted live on ABC from Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 12 at 7 p.m. CT.
In 2023, the Tigers made history by winning the NCAA Championship with a remarkable 34-2 record. They set a championship game record by scoring 102 points in their victory over Iowa, which was watched by a record-high viewership of 9.9 million viewers.
The team’s season began with an incredible 23 straight wins. They also tied a NCAA record by scoring over 100 points in five consecutive games. With their sixth 100-point game of the season in the championship match against Iowa, the Tigers set a program record for the most 100-point games in a season.
Angel Reese, an All-American player, was a key figure in LSU’s championship win. She secured a NCAA record of 34 double-doubles, becoming just the fourth player in SEC history to lead the conference in both scoring and rebounding with an average of 23.0 points and 15.4 rebounds per game. Reese also set the SEC record with 555 rebounds and led the country with six games of recording at least 20 points and 20 rebounds. Her outstanding performance has earned her a nomination for the Best Breakthrough Athlete award.
