Angel Reese is a fresh talent in the WNBA, and rewriting the record books. The young star has been instrumental in propelling the WNBA All-Stars to victory against Team USA in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game. But Reese didn't just help her team win, she created her own piece of history.
Playing for the Chicago Sky, Reese has earned a reputation as a "double-double machine." In the world of basketball, a double-double is achieved when a player records a double-digit total in two of five statistical categories—points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots—in a game. With her of 12 points and 11 rebounds in the All-Star Game, Reese not only helped her team secure victory but also became the first rookie to ever record a double-double in an All-Star Game.
This achievement is monumental. It's a testament to Reese's skill, determination, and sheer force on the court. However, being the humble and focused athlete she is, Reese didn't seem too taken aback by this accomplishment. She simply stated that she expects herself to record a double-double every time she steps on the court. "Is it a surprise? I feel like I do this every night. The expectations are set and that’s what I’m expected to do." said Reese.
Reese is currently averaging 13.5 points and 11.9 rebounds per game for the Chicago Sky. While this is a common occurrence for her, it doesn't make it any less impressive. And to do it in the All-Star Game as a rookie is an even bigger achievement.
For Reese, though, it's just another day at the office. She will look to continue her streak of double-doubles when the Sky return to action midway in August.
